Malaysian car company Perodua's cars ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in its 2020 car sales rankings. 1st place is Myvi, 2nd place is Axia, and 3rd place is Bezza. And this sales ranking is the same in 2018 and 2019. In fact, Perodua's competitor is Perodua. It is funny that 'dua' in Perodua, Malaysian's largest car manufacturer means two.

Myvi, The Absolute Market Leader

Myvi is the best-selling car in Malaysia. Myvi started with the first generation in 2005 and went on to the third generation model in 2017. Myvi's facelifted thired generation model was launched on 18 November 2021.

The 3rd generation model has a completely different appearance from the previous generation. So, I asked if the parts of the 3rd generation and the previous generation model were compatible, and Perodua Vehicle Maintenance Center said that the parts are not interchangeable.

Perodua's 3rd generation Myvi

So, when talking about the 3rd generation Myvi with employees at two maintenance centers, it is said that the 3rd generation Myvi is a completely different car not only in appearance but also in all aspects.

However, it is said that the reason why this completely different car is still released under the brand name Myvi is because of the brand power of Myvi. And although it was launched in 2017 and is approaching 5 years in 2020, Myvi is said to have no plans to develop a new car for the time being.

In particular, in the case of design, Perodua's designer Muhamad Zamuren Musa and the internal design team redesigned Perodua's Myvi and Bezza.

It is said that even the interior of the vehicle, including the engine, was made with Perodua's own technology. Of course, it is said that Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Company, consulted on the design of the 3rd generation Myvi and Vezza.

So the first and second generations of Myvi are based on Daihatsu Boon.  Daihatsu's Boone is the same vehicle as  Daihatsu's Sirion, Toyota Passo, and Subaru Justy. The reason Subaru sells the same vehicle is because Subaru is also under Toyota Motor Corporation.

Previous generation Myvi

However, the 3rd generation Myvi also uses an engine that is almost similar to the Toyota Yaris. Ultimately, Perodua is making vehicles based on Daihatsu's Toyota engines and Daihatsu's vehicle development platform.

Perodua's second plant will be built similar to the Daihatsu Kyushu plant in Kanatsu City, Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, to use Daihatsu's vehicle platform. Daihatsu Kyushu Factory is located between Beppu City and Kitakyushu City. Daihatsu Kyushu Factory is a factory built in Kyushu to replace the factory in Okasa. Daihatsu established Factory 1 in 2004 and Factory 2 in 2007 to focus on developing light vehicles and electric vehicles.

Myvi's 1.5L engine uses a 4-speed automatic transmission. And according to Perodua, it goes 20.1 km per liter. Perodua will launch the 3rd generation Myvi on November 16, 2017 with a total of 6 options.

  • 1.5L AV: RM 52.697
  • 1.5LH: RM 50.530
  • 1.3LX w ASA 2.0: RM 46.959
  • 1.3LX ww/0 ASA 2.0: RM 44.959
  • 1.3LG automatic transmission: RM 43,029
  • 1.3LG manual transmission: RM 41,292

Perodua added a safety feature called ASA 2.0 (Advance Safety Assist 2.0). This safety feature adds up to 2,000 ringgit off the price of a new car. This is a safety feature that ASA 2.0 includes.

  • PCW (Pre-Collision Warning)
  • PCB (Pre-Collision Braking)
  • FDA (head start warning)
  • PMC (Pedal Malfunction Control)

Perodua Compact Sedan, Bezza

Perodua's Bezza is a monumental car in two ways. Even the name Bezza comes from the Malay word  'BEZA', which means 'different'.

The first is a vehicle developed completely unrelated to Toyota Motors or Daihatsu. Perodua even said that the car he most referenced when designing the Vezza was Chevrolet's  AveoIn fact, there is a separate car that the Bezza is based on.

The back of Bezza, Perodua

Second, Perodua's Myvi and Axia are both hatchback models, while the Bezza is a sedan model. So, it is Perodua's car that competes against sedan models such as Proton's Saga.

Bezza is the second car made at Perodua's second factory, following Axia. The Bezza is closer to the Axia than the Myvi. This is because Perodua is an improved vehicle based on Axia .

Bezza

The Bezza is made with two types of 3-cylinder engines, 1.0L and 1.3L, using Axia's 1.0L engine and adding VVT-i. Perodua says that the 1.3L engine's Eco Drive can run 22km per liter.

  • 1.3 AV: RM 48,356 - Vehicle stability control (VSC), traction control (TRC), brake assist (BA), hill start assist added
  • 1.3 X: RM 42,551
  • 1.0 G automatic transmission: RM 35,391
  • 1.0 G manual transmission: RM 33,456

Small Hatchback, Axia

Axia is a microcar released by Perodua in 2014. Perodua is developing a new car to replace the VIVA. Axia is Perodua's 10th car. The car's name is AXIA, a name created by replacing 'S' with 'X', which means 10 in Greek.

Perodua Axia

Axia is a car based on the Toyota Agya and Daihatsu Ayla. Perodua purchases engine and vehicle development platform licenses from Toyota and Daihatsu to create Axia.

And we will invest approximately 1.3 billion ringgit to build Perodua 's second factory near Rawang, in the northern area of Kuala Lumpur. Rawang is where Perodua's headquarters are located.

Axia is the first car made at Perodua Factory 2. 95% of Axia's parts are produced locally, and 5% are imported from Japan and Indonesia. Axia's engine is developed by taking the Toyota engine and excluding VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence). Later, VVT-i was re-entered into the Bezza engine.

The engine is said to be capable of running up to 21.6 km per liter with a manual transmission and 20.1 km per liter with an automatic transmission. It also becomes the first car to be certified to Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) fuel efficiency standards , a goal of  Malaysia's National Automobile Policy 2014 (NAP 2014) .

  • AV (Advance): RM 41,427 - ASA 2.0, front sensor
  • SE: RM 37,515  - rear sensor, front sensor
  • Style: RM 37,515  - 15-inch wheels, rear camera, rear sensor
  • GXtra AV: RM 33,940 - Rear sensor
  • Standard G: RM 32,485
  • Standard E manual transmission: RM 23,367

Axia gets 4 stars in crash tests from the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP).  Axia is better than Myvi's 2nd generation, which got 3 stars.

What's unique about Axia compared to other cars is that Axia's color is pink. When seen from the road, it is a light pink color, but surprisingly pink is popular, so it is quite visible from the road.

Opinions On Perodua Compact Cars

The Malaysians whom I know mostly drive Japanese cars. You can see  Toyota Vios , Honda City, and Civic the most. People who are new to society prefer small cars from Perodua. Car loans in Malaysia can last for up to 9 years. You can buy a car after you have work just a few months with 9 years of installment.

Proton cars and Perodua cars are similar. Proton's new Saga ranks 4th and 5th in the Malaysian car market. Saga and Honda's City are fighting for fourth place. When driving Perodua's Viva, Axia, Bezza, and Myvi, the interior feels like an old car. I don't pay attention to features like connectivity and displays that are coming out these days.

Therefore, Malaysia's National Automotive Policy 2020 believes that the automobile industry must move towards new future technologies. However, the current address of Perodua Automobiles is making cars that meet their essential purpose.

Considering the price of the car, it makes sense. As new technology is added, the price goes up, so from a consumer's point of view, a current, cheaper car may be a better car than a car equipped with new technology.

Three cars in this stroy are already old models. Anyway what car do you like?
